BCU/UKCC Update - March 2007

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

As you would expect from Glenmore Lodge we have been working closely with the BCU with regards the development and implementation of the new BCU United Kingdom Coaching Certificate courses. You will have seen already that Glenmore Lodge has been intending to support the BCU in running some of the first BCU UKCC courses as they became available to be run.
The BCU have just changed the timeline for the implementation of many of the UKCC courses that we were hoping to run for the BCU this season. This is due the Sports Coach UK validation process and the time required to produce the appropriate resources for the new courses. The BCU feel that to put back the starting date of the new UKCC courses now is essential to ensure the coaches get the fully prepared and researched standard of UKCC coaching course they deserve.
This considered Glenmore Lodge have to cancel some of the UKCC courses. To still allow coaches to progress through the system the BCU are allowing the current BCU qualifications to continue to run until the UKCC courses start. Therefore Glenmore Lodge now has additional current BCU courses running throughout 2007. These dates are available on our website pages.
The new UKCC implementation timeline is as follows:
UKCC/BCU Level 1 - First Courses from 1st October 2007.
UKCC/BCU Level 2 - First Courses from 1st October 2007.
UKCC/BCU Level 3 - First Courses from 2008 (exact dates to be communicated during May 2007)
UKCC/BCU Level 4 - First Courses from 2008 (exact dates to be communicated during May 2007)
UKCC/BCU Level 5 - To be confirmed.
Current BCU Awards continuation timeline is as follows:
BCU Level 1 - Run until 31st August 2007.
BCU Level 2 Training - Run until 31st August 2007.
BCU Level 2 Assessment - Run until end 2010.
BCU Level 3 Training - Run through to Autumn 2007. (exact dates to be communicated during May 2007)
BCU Level 3 Assessment - Run until end 2010.
BCU Level 4 - No further registrations.
BCU Level 5 Training - Will continue for the foreseeable future- details to be communicated.
BCU Level 5 Assessment - Run until end 2010.
Coaching Process’s - Run until 2008 (details to be communicated during May 2007)
Canoe Safety Test - Will continue as a pre-requisite for coaching awards into 2008.
WWS&R - Run until 2008 (details to be communicated during May 2007)
It will also be possible to convert from a current BCU training onto UKCC/BCU
Assessment as the UKCC courses become available, this should allow easy access onto the new UKCC/BCU Scheme.

Wilderness First Responder Course

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Glenmore Lodge will be running the Wilderness First Responder Course from the 29th October to the 4th November 2007.

The First Responder certificate is growing in reputation as a global standard in training. The Wilderness First Responder Course includes the First Responder Syllabus and applies it to remote situations including protracted care issues.

The WFR course focuses on extending students basic knowledge of first aid through lectures containing theory and practical sessions and scenarios applying the techniques. Treatment plans are taught by concepts to allow the students to apply them in diverse situations.
Students are engaged and encouraged to gather data to enable an on-line doctor to make a diagnosis and direct basic treatment. The course develops the ability to gather and communicate medical and scene information and focuses on the following core competences:

· Effective patient assessment in diverse environments and situations
· Safe, appropriate use of oxygen, AED and Entonox
· Basic treatment for fractures including traction
· Transportation of casualties
· Triage and scene management
· Long-term patient management

Retention of skills is ensured through a proven learning system, this involves a four-step process: theory, demonstration, practical, and finally, scenarios. All students are continually assessed in and out of-doors throughout this intensive course.

The course develops a supportive learning environment to allow students and trainers to give and receive feedback. The atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable to ensure that everyone is open to learning. The course is a continually learning process both from the faculty of trainers and from other students. Mentoring is used to allow students to be coached on a one to one level throughout the course.

The course is designed for those working in remote locations for those with support from another more experienced medic or online support from a doctor. Those attending have included Mountain Rescue teams and remote exploration team members and many more from adventure tourism.

Tiso Inverness Outdoor Experience is ready!

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Tiso is ready to open the doors to the crowds that will no doubt be rushing in from the Highlands to their new Inverness Outdoor Experience. Alpine Bikes are there too so all your outdoor needs
can be answered under the same roof.
The official opening was in the store with all the Tiso family there toasting to the success of their latest venture with their team.

Cameron McNeish gave a very uplifting speech to celebrate that Tiso is not only is a great retail outlet, but that it contibutes to the environment and communities that it serves. He was not short of praise for all the projects they support both financially and vocally. Lets face it, he is a man who says it how it is, so that is praise indeed.

GOOD LUCK TO THE INVERNESS TISO TEAM FROM ALL THE TEAM AT THE LODGE!

Doug at the NEC Outdoor and Canoe Show......

I will be down at the NEC at the Outdoor and Canoe Show from the 16-18th March working with P&H on their stand. I will have the new dvd with me and you can come and talk about Lodge things, paddling trips or of course P&H boats.

Also to let you know I have put in an extra article to Jace at C&K entitled 'The Spice of Life - India White Water' it is quite a big piece with lots of images. It will hopefully be a good read for those of you interested in paddling in India.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers,

Doug
