Off to Greenland for an adventure...

Doug, Carl, Lara, Giles, Roy, Dawn and Heather are all on their way for a sea kayaking adventure around the southern tip of Greenland. The conditions (for those of you who monitor icebergs) are the best that Doug has seen for 17 years....pretty good then!

They have a great team that have more experience than you could shake a stick at and more than enough humour to get them through any of the tough times.

If successful the girls will be the first British women to have completed this route...we love the odd 1st being thrown in.

We wish them well and will keep you updated with their progress.

Nigel is off for an adventure in Greenland Nansen style!

Friday, August 01, 2008

Nigel Williams is off with the army to cross the Greenland icecap. They are attmpting to follow the same route as Nansen did in 1888. However, although it is the same area, the terrain could prove to be much more dangerous due to the change in the icecap.

The first major obstacle is to get to the ice cap at all. They will be in small boats negociating a 250km journey through ice filled waters to get to the start point. This has not been achieved for over 25 years so just getting there will be a success.

Then they will be pulling 85 kilo sleds across the ice cap in 35 days. This will take them from the waters edge on the east to the the waters edge on the west. Google earth is a great place to have a look. If you zoom in you will see lots of long dark lines that are trying to cross...they are all rivers! They don't know how deep they are or frozen or anything. That is all part of the adventure though.

We want to wish all the good luck in the world to Nigel and James Woodhouse ( big boss of the trip and freelance instructor here at the Lodge) and of course the whole team.

We will keep you posted about their progress.
