Stewart Island Circumnavigation by Carl and Giles

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

Giles has recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand where he teamed up with Carl to circumnavigate Stewart Island by Sea Kayak. The trip was a success though they had to cope with fairly extreme weather and some tight weather windows. Needless to say on a day of 40knot winds they ascended Mount Anglem, Stewart island's own 'Munro'. Some 50km+ paddling days were necessary as was an 0500 start. With just 5 km to go they had to wait 2 hrs for the wind to ease before continuing. It was not exactly a holiday...taking 8 days in total Giles reckoned he lost 4kg in body weight.

Ben Nevis CIC hut week

Monday, April 05, 2010

Giles is just back from an amazing week based at the CIC hut with two clients - Veronica Legg and Zane Denton.
We had a great week despite the attempts of the wind to thwart our efforts on Tuesday when we were one of only two teams to climb.
On Monday in great weather we climbed Tower Ridge and descended No. 4 Gully. On Tuesday we battled to Italian Climb Right Hand in very strong winds and descended by abseil, on Wednesday we climbed a steep Vanishing Gully with an abseil descent down 1934 Route, on Thursday we climbed Orion Direct, we were the only team climbing on the Orion Face and descended via Coire Leis and on Friday we were first on Point Five in sublime conditions. With an 0500 wake up it was worth the effort. We visited the summit of the Ben on 3 occasions.
