International Meet
27 climbing nationalities are visiting us here in Scotland thanks to the BMC. They may have missed the winter wonderland we have had over the past few months but it has not stopped them enjoying themselves and finding routes here in the Ciarngorms and off on The Ben.
It was not enough to have climbed all day. They needed more so Andy Turner helped to put together a tooling competition here at The Lodge on our outside walls.
It is such a great mix of nationalities and abilities and all with the same passion for climbing.
We will do report on the week with pictures and interviews. So watch this space.

BMC International Meet at Glenmore Lodge
Friday, February 20, 2009

Nations unite on Scottish summits
Mountaineers from around the world will team up with British climbers to tackle routes in the Scottish mountains, as part of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC)’s International Meet taking place this week (22 February to 1 March).
BMC international meets are annual gatherings of climbers, alternating between winter meets in Scotland and summer meets in north Wales. This year’s winter meet sees 40 international climbers from 27 countries worldwide, climbing together with 40 British hosts.
International guests include renowned US climber and International Mountain Guide Zoe Hart. Also attending is Japanese mountaineer Kei Taniguchi who, alongside her climbing partner Kazuya Hiraide, accomplished one of the most significant new routes in the Himalaya in autumn 2008 on the South East Face of Kamet in India's Central Garwhal.
Amongst the accomplished British mountaineers acting as hosts, is Scotland’s Dave MacLeod. Dave has accomplished many of Scotland’s hardest climbing routes and in 2008 established possibly the world's hardest ‘trad’ route ‘Echo Wall’ situated high on the north face of Ben Nevis.
The BMC’s International Meet gives an opportunity for oversees guests to experience the full diversity of Scottish winter climbing. Scotland’s mountain regions offer climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers a wide variety of opportunities from ice climbing and hill walking in the Cairngorms to steep challenging rock faces on Ben Nevis.
The base for the meet is Glenmore Lodge – Scotland's National Outdoor Training Centre – in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. After hard days out on rock, snow and ice, the climbers will re-convene for evening socials and presentations by attendees.
Nick Colton, BMC Deputy CEO said: “BMC International Meets always spawn some fantastic mountaineering achievements as well as foster great friendships between climbers of all nationalities. We’re looking forward to welcoming our international guests and introducing them to the delights of winter climbing in Scotland.“

No point in not showing off.........
Wednesday, February 18, 2009

For those of you who have been in Scotland for the last few weeks you will know how amazing it has been so we may as well show off some great route images from the team. Pauline is particularly happy with this shot as it is one of the few photos of her climbing where she doesn't look like Phil is giving her an assisted hoist!
The route is Scabbard Chimney on Lochan in Glen Coe (V6)

Nice Ice! Giles goes climbing.............
Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Was climbing with mate from Yorkshire – Jon Berry. On Saturday we were one of only four climbing teams in Creag Meaghaidh. We had Last Post all to ourselves and in good condition with no cornice threat. We had an 0700 start from the car park and were home in time to watch Wales beat England. Mike Pescod had a successful time on Smith’s Route.
It was apparent that a couple of the teams on Centre and South post had had a somewhat later start than us and we watched one team back off South Post and the other looking like having to do the same on Centre Post. You should not underestimate the time needed for a Meggy day out!
On Sunday we strayed closer to home and headed for Hell’s Lum. Devil’s Delight was not quite all there so we climbed Salamander with some interesting moves off the start of the second pitch. Had a full 50 metres of good - though variable in depth - ice on the first pitch. It will all be in Loch Avon now. Saw four water-ski tourers cross a frozen Loch Avon.

Its a winter wonderland up here!
Sunday, February 08, 2009

The snow has come thick and fast with an average of 2cm per hour on Friday. How fab it that?!
Our courses have all been running as normal but with some ingenious ways of using this snow covered powder delux deep terrain. Some of our winter skills course students this weekend were not going to get to use crampons if imaginative leaders did not act. So just to make sure they got a good feel of ice under thier points Rosie, took them to a frozen Loch Morlich. Other teams had snow shoes and other teams instead of going up into Cirngorms used the local hill Meall a' Bhuachaille for some fun and games which is not normally in good enough condition. Now it is covered and image is of Emma Holgate skiing off the side today with blue skies and soft snow. FANTASTIC!
See you up here.....the snow isn't going anywhere fast.

Donald, you seem quite at home in your new office from Snowsport Scotland here at the Lodge. Thanks for bringing the snow with you! IT's not everywhere you can go for a quick ski during your lunch break - it's good to see you making the most of the fresh snow falls.

The snow is here - and lots of it!
Thursday, February 05, 2009

No doubt you will have all had some snow in varying degrees. We have now got our share and wow is there lots of it! It took our largest tractor to clear the way this monring just to get to the Lodge but we are loving it and the courses are still going on despite new challenges of getting access to the mountains. It is very handy having them on our doorstep and there is nothing a good pair of snow shoes can't handle.
Here is a picture of the team this morning. Yes the snow on the tress is a good reflection of how much has fallen...MASSES!

Balvenie whiskey and Glenmore Lodge
Balvenie Distillery is located up the road from Glenmore Lodge. We have both recognised that we have alot in common in that we both love the outdoors and a wee dram. So we are coming together so that our outdoor enthusiasts can benefit from one of the most traditional and quality whiskey producers in Scotland.
Some of our team had to go for a test drive to make sure that standards were high and Doug as Head of Paddlesport, Matt as Head of Catering, Liz as Head of Events thought is was essential for them to be there for obvious reasons. Pauline and Nigel just thought it would be a good crack!
Look forward to enjoying a few wee drams on a Thursday night in the bar in winter while learning about what makes a good whiskey great.
We hope to keep your spirits high!
